I Used To Wear A Hard Hat

We all go through tough times in life. My darkest time was in 2001 when my life fell apart for all sorts of reasons – too personal to talk about here. Let me just say that there were questionable decisions and unwise actions made by me and others that set me on a crash course away from family, friends and job.

One time I was International Director of one of the biggest Short Term Practical Aid agencies in Europe, then suddenly everything went down the tubes. I well remember giving up my company vehicle and managing to scrape £400 together to buy an old Ford Escort. I had nowhere to live and without a permanent address, was turned away by my church denomination who could not offer help.

I got a job driving vans for an agency at £5.00 an hour. One of the jobs was for Initial Towels, delivering and changing towels in public toilets! I remember thinking at the time, “God has a real sense of humour!” But it wasn’t funny for me. I was very lost.

After spending some time in a Christian Healing Centre, I was put in touch with a marketing agency and they helped me get a job as a marketing consultant with a construction company in London. I worked my way up, gaining experience along the way working with different companies and ended up as a Business Development Manager in a medium-sized construction company.

I well remember the day I was visiting a construction site in Eastbourne, a 5 million pound construction project, and one of the workmen asked me to pray for them! A little unusual on a building site! The workforce new that I was a Christian, but I never preached at people – just tried to live out my Christian beliefs. They all gathered around, I prayed, and the man said, “That’s amazing! I feel so much better. Thank you!”

I worked in marketing for 10 years and learned a lot of valuable things about business development in the real world. I learnt so much that I wrote and published a video marketing course for construction companies.

I don’t wear a hard hat anymore! I’m doing other things with my life. But I did write a poem about it:

I Can Sell Stones

Chorus: They said,
“You are an evangelist, you can sell stones
Marketing is your business, just pick up the phones”

Buildings in London,
Property in Kent
Flats in posho Kensington,
Apartments to rent

Altogether now:
“You are an evangelist, you can sell stones
Marketing is your business, just pick up the phones”

Refurbs and fit-outs
Maintenance and repairs
Ten storey buildings
Ten flights of stairs

Take a deep breath:
“You are an evangelist, you can sell stones
Marketing is your business, just pick up the phones”

Commercial and retail
Social housing too
You must reach your targets
You should know a thing or two

Come on, you know you want to join in:
“You are an evangelist, you can sell stones
Marketing is your business, just pick up the phones”

“Construction in recession
But it’s miracles you DO,
You had better make it happen
Right out of the BLUE”

Stop the song, because my heart screams:
“If I do not preach the gospel
Even the stones will cry out”
